Sometimes you'll encounter an NPC in a dungeon if the story calls for it, but otherwise these areas are completely devoid of other players. The dungeons are all cookie-cutter shapes copied and pasted together, kind of like the original Legend of Zelda but somehow less interesting. There's this keyword system that lets you go to a practically infinite number of areas, but these areas are all virtually the same - wide open field with monsters to fight, some obstacles that you can't interact with, maybe a Spring of Myst, maybe some Grunty food, and a dungeon. Each server has its own root town where you can save your game and buy supplies, and I felt like that was about as interesting as it got. The problem I have is that The World as it's portrayed in Infection is incredibly bland and boring. There's all this lore behind the world of the game, like how Altimit OS is the only one to survive a massive virus, and how Harald programmed the basis of The World as a sort of love letter to Emma, and I find all that stuff fascinating. Kite gets this bracelet that allows him to rewrite game code, fixing some of the corrupted data in the process, but that power is more than what a player should have and he's seen as a potential threat because of it. We have an online game that's becoming corrupted and it's causing players in the real world to fall into comas, and other players are investigating the game trying to figure out what's causing it. If I were to rate it on a number scale, I'd probably give it 4/10.

Obviously, it's only about 1/4 of the whole experience, but even with that in mind it feels lacking. I finally beat Infection the other day, and was really underwhelmed by the whole experience. As a big fan of SIGN, Legend of the Twilight, and ROOTS, I was excited to get into the games.
